 Many African peoples believed that a god could take the form of a lion. These devouring lions were ancient kings who came from the realm of the dead to protect people. With their mere presence, they could cure serious illnesses, but also, shrouded in ghostly sorcery, they had the power to take life. Many African rulers have believed themselves to be descended from lions, as there are many legends about the connection and loyalty of these dangerous creatures to humans, bestowing upon them supernatural powers.

 This sculpture is made of bronze (but can be made of other materials). The patina has yellowish and reddish tones, but like the material, these can vary. The dimensions may vary slightly, and the patina may also vary, as these sculptures are handcrafted one by one.
